Day 4--March 3. By Jack Kim
Today was an excursion day. We have gone to places as we planned. We gathered up in the front lobby at 9 and left with the bus that we took to come from the airport to the Sindhu beach hotel. First place we dropped off was Denny’s village called Carangsari to see the kids playing gamelan. There were about 15 to 20 kids who have been practicing several different pieces and it sounded tremendous. It was more than amazing. After watching them playing we had chance to see the ceremony of the dead. It was cremation ritual and it wasn’t like anything else. The ritual held in place called the Shiva temple. Wayan included this statement.” The crematory and the temple of death always had been and will be together in the same area. The ceremony was really loud and joyful. Normally you would imagine the ceremony of the dead will be really quite and mournful, but Bali’s ceremony was the opposite. While the ceremony was proceeding the weather changed dry and hot. After watching parts of the ceremony we came back to the bus to have lunch. Some of us ate the box lunch that has been given from the restaurant but most of us ate the food from the restaurant. After the lunch we head to the monkey forest called sangeh. The forest was enormous and also gorgeous. I couldn’t stop looking at the background of the forest. It was just amazing. We have seen lots and lots of monkeys in the forest and got a chance to take a picture with them and touch them. The day has passed really fast but before all this ended I got a chance to eat the local grilled corn with suiyan. The corn was really good! It was spicy but also buttery and it all came along so well.
